Five years ago, a masked killer brutally murdered a group of friends. Since then, Camryn (Akasha Villalobos), the lone survivor, has struggled to reclaim her shattered life. Wracked with guilt and paranoia, Camryn leads a depressingly lonely existence until Nick (Brian Villalobos), a new co-worker, befriends Camryn and attempts to integrate her into his group of friends. Just when she might be ready to start a new life, Camryn’s past comes back to haunt her. Can Camryn ever have a life again, or is she destined to be alone?
Last Girl Standing is a somewhat original approach to a horror movie. Many films of the genre end with the cliche final girl left standing, a near broken woman but a survivor regardless. Then the sequel comes out 18 months later and the villain returns but not the final girl. So what happened to this character? Why she was written in such a strong and positive manner that warranted her not being killed but being axed from a follow up film?
These are questions Last Girl Standing wants to answer. Director Benjamin R Moody says of his features story “In a way, Last Girl Standing is a sequel to a movie that does not exist but you are extremely familiar with. I want to look at the repetitious nature of horror franchises. It’s an attempt to take a grounded and unique look at how a horror franchise repeats itself over and over again.”
Some recent horror flicks have became ‘self aware’ and acknowledge the genres well trodden paths, but not quite to this extent. This is something Moody says was unintentional for his work. “I never set out to make a super meta, self-referential film about horror movies. I love this stuff and never wanted to make fun of it.” He continues “I wanted to dive into the aftermath of a slasher movie. When seeing your friends be hacked to pieces by a masked killer, how do you go back to regular life? I wanted to see where that survivor would be 5 years later and how those events might still affect her.”
Directed and written by Moody, it is evident that he has put a lot into Last Girl Standing. With it’s world premiere taking place at the horror event of the summer countless genre fans will find out what happens to the last girl standing…
